The next morning, Sinclair woke to the feeling of River in her arms. They’d gone back to their usual sleeping habits, with River on her side, her back against Sinclair’s chest, Sinclair holding her from behind. Without stopping to think, Sinclair lowered her head, kissing River’s neck, nuzzling her as she pressed closer from behind.

River woke, feeling Sinclair’s warmth surrounding her and her lips against her neck. Reaching back, she slid her hand over Sinclair’s thigh, pulling her closer. In moments they were touching and caressing. River turned over, her lips seeking Sinclair’s. Neither of them was thinking as the fire between them caught. Clothes were removed and tossed aside, and skin against skin caused them both to gasp. Minutes later they were both crying out in their release.

“Well…” River gasped as she laid her head against Sinclair’s chest.

“Mmhmm,” Sinclair murmured, breathing heavily as well.

“I just can’t resist you,” River said, shaking her head mournfully.

“Same here, babe,” Sinclair said, kissing River’s forehead.

“Are we going to be able to be in the same house without this happening?”

“Not sure,” Sinclair said honestly.

“Are we going to try?”

“If you’re still willing to work with my grandfather…”

“Of course I am, Sin. I’m not abandoning him,” River said, her tone making Sinclair smile.

River had just met Abe once, and she was already devoted to him. It said a lot about who she was, compared to Tracey.

Later that morning, Sinclair discovered yet more endearing things about River. They’d discussed going back over to River’s apartment to get some clothes and things for her to stay at the house in Bel Air. Sinclair dressed in faded jeans, a sweatshirt, and combat boots, looking like the butch River was used to again. River watched, fascinated, as Sinclair made coffee in the fancy kitchen, and then as she poured it into a thermal cup to take with her. It was such a contrast—the completely different setting, but the same Sinclair that River was used to seeing.

They got into Sinclair’s Challenger and headed to the apartment. On the way, a song came on Sinclair’s iPhone that surprised River; it was a Missy Elliott track, a very, very hip-hop rap style, and so completely not what River was used to from Sinclair’s music.

“I’m sorry?” River said, looking shocked as she gestured to the stereo.

Sinclair laughed, shaking her head. “That’s a Memphis addition.”

“A what?”

Sinclair grinned. “Memphis is one of the people I hang out with when I’m not working. She’s a DJ and sound person, and she’s forever loading new music on people’s iPods. She’s been known to actually steal Remi’s iPod to load new music. She wants to broaden everyone’s horizons.”

River laughed. “So her way of broadening everyone’s horizons is to steal people’s iPods and load random music on them?”

“Yeah,” Sinclair said. “You have to meet her to understand—she’s really cute like that.”

River nodded, noting the look on Sinclair’s face. “She sounds like a character,” she said, smiling. “I’d love to meet her. And Finley too.”

“Okay,” Sinclair said.

“And she’s a doctor?”

“Yeah. She’s also the fiancée of my trainer.
